What is unique about the GXV3240?

  • Both traditional IP phone format and touchscreen
  • Runs Android OS
  • Bluetooth
  • HDMI for external screen
  • Video camera
  • Touchscreen 4.3”
  • Expansion Module (click here)
  • Full access to Google Play store

Some questions I have about the GXV3240:

  • Will the keypad/buttons work with Lync 2013? (or just touchscreen?)
    • A: Appears like the GXV3240 has an app to integrate the phone buttons/keypad to Lync. See the picture below)
  • Will the expansion module integrate with the Lync 2013 mobile app?
  • Does the voicemail light integrate with Lync voicemail?
  • The GXV3240 has video built-in, but does it work with Lync 2013? (video does not demo video)
    • According to “Using Lync on GXV3240” (click here) the video camera does work with Lync

The below dialer app integrates the phone keypad with Lync 2013 Mobile. (See more here)

With optional expansion module. (I do not know if this works with Lync)

The GXV3240 is not listed as a Microsoft Lync certified IP phone. (but there is currently no category to certify devices running the Lync 2013 mobile client that I know of)

This is an interesting new category of Lync capable IP phones. I suspect this might not be the last Android based IP phone to add Lync capabilities using the Lync 2013 mobile client. Certainly an interesting new angle.

#Lync User QuickTip #30: How to Instant Message ScreenShots

With the latest version of Lync 2013 you can easily instant message pictures by just copying them in the Lync IM area. So to grab and IM a picture press [PrintScreen] key on your keyboard and copy into the Lync 2013 instant message window. Done!

Note: To get more sophisticated and just capture part of the screen you can use OneNote and press [Windows] + N, select an area and paste into Lync.

Marshall McLuhan & Unified Communications: Is UC Hot or Cold Media?

image

I am currently working on Marshall McLuhan’s “Understanding Media” and the obvious question that struck me: Is unified communications hot or cold media? (See the above chart to refresh your memory on what hot and cold media is) Eduardo Nava has written an excellent article titled After Media (2009) that investigates current media and includes thoughts on Skype and mobile phones.

Some thoughts from his article for those of you who don’t have time to read the whole scholarly thing:

  • Most media is cooling
    • My commentary: Think about it that almost everything is now social and allow user participation: YouTube, Facebook, blogs, etc.
  • The telephone is getting hotter
    • My commentary: Is this because we are attending more listen only audio conferences than ever? or because we now have free HD conferences? (www.uberconference.com)
    • Voicemail – yeah, very little participation.
  • Skype is telephone cooled
    • More participation: instant message, see video as well (not single sense) and interact in that way. And yet for many video resolution is not HD.

A question that occurred to me: Can media be both hot and cold? High definition and high participation? Isn’t that what in person interaction is?
